Chapter Twelve

Dax sensed Robyn’s approach long before the pale glow of her lantern filtered through the aged slats of the abandoned cottage. The shafts of light shifted across the gritty floorboards like an unfolding fan as she moved along the length of the building, heading for the door.

Even though the black dome of night echoed with the ever-present wind and the loud wash of the Channel below, Dax could clearly hear her. He heard her breathing, which was fast, like her heartbeat…he heard her footfalls, which were but the barest of whispers through sparse grass and across loose stone, damp dirt…he heard even the sound of her fist curling in soft fabric as she lifted her skirts to hurry her pace.

That she had followed him here, to this lone patch of his past where he intended to ride out the midnight, away from the others, away from her, irritated the man, but excited the Phantom. The man wanted to leave, to use his Curse to shimmer away before she found him, but the beast was determined that he stay.

Dax heard the click of the latch as it was slowly lifted, watched as the door came open an inch.

The light of her lantern edged back the blackness of the room. She took a cautious step inside.
